While Mitch Levy’s introduction to the 2018 Australian Superbike Championship during last weekend’s opening round at the Phillip Island Circuit in Victoria wasn’t an easy one, there were numerous positives that the determined rider was able to draw from his first hit out.

Forced to battle the wet weather conditions in an event that supported the opening round of the World Superbike Championship, Levy was unfortunately behind the eight ball from the outset, with the Yamaha privateer team struggling to find speed in their tyres which resulted in Levy qualifying towards the rear of the 40-rider field in 35th, where he was required to start each race throughout the weekend. However, Levy certainly didn’t let his qualifying result put a damper on his determination.

Quickly adapting to the challenging conditions after qualifying, Levy, a fourth-generation racer, showed impressive resolve in race one, bouncing back with a 21st-place finish, before further managing to improve in race two, coming home a pleasing 14th. In the third and final race, Levy’s consistency once again saw him pass a significant number of fellow competitors, ultimately placing 17th.

“It wasn’t quite the first round that we were hoping to have, but we did the best we could with what we had and came away with some points, so I’m proud of the whole team for their efforts,” enthused the 23-year- old racer.

“The entire weekend was a great learning experience for us and we’ll definitely be taking some added knowledge into the next round, where we’ll be focusing on tyre selection to suit the track and qualifying, which is vital to achieving a strong result.”

Off the back of entering into a media agreement this season in order to up his marketing game, Levy was also excited to take part in a paddock interview with three of the sport’s heavy hitters in three-time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss, Josh Waters and Bryan Staring.

The Dural, NSW-based rider will now take a three-week break, before contesting the second Australian Superbike Championship round in his home state at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway on March 16-18, where he’ll be hoping to qualify strongly to set himself up for the rest of the weekend.
