Round two of the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) proved to be a successful one for the Yamaha Racing teams despite facing challenging conditions on a hot and windy weekend at Wakefield Park, NSW.

Wayne Maxwell led the day for in the Superbike class for YRT, taking 1-2 results to finish second for the round and move to third in the championship while Daniel Falzon proved ultra-consistent again with his 4-4 results and sits in fifth place after round two.

In the 600cc Supersport class is was a red letter weekend for YRT’s Cru Halliday. Halliday was on song from the moment he hit the track in qualifying, taking pole position on his YZF- R6 and then going on to win both races with comfortable margins over his rivals. The round victory has him within a handful of points of the championship lead.

“It was an important round for the team to get back on track after an up and down event at round one at Phillip Island,” explains YRT manager, John Redding. “We highlighted with the riders the importance of being consistent and racking up points in every race and to their credit, all three did a great job at Wakefield Park and we have found ourselves back in the championship hunt, which is very pleasing.

“It was also a good reward for Kevin and Jeff and the rest of the behind the scenes team as they have had an enormous work load to start the year and they did some long hours between rounds one and two to ensure things were headed in the right direction.

“Round three is at the new Tailem Bend track in South Australia and one all of us are looking forward to. A new track means everyone is on a level playing field and I have confidence we will be on top of things and ready to go when things get serious in SA,” Redding ends.

There was plenty of success in the 300cc Supersport event with Zac Levy taking the round win and consolidating second place in the championship. His bLU cRU 300 Racing team mates of Tom Bramich in third and Hunter Ford in sixth.

All three riders also contested the YMF R3 Cup and again it was Zac Levy in control taking all three race wins, this time ahead of Hunter Ford in second.

“Wakefield proved to be a challenging round for the R3 riders as the wind played havoc with the riders on the track and each of them having some issue through the weekend,” said team supervisor, Ian Irving. “But to their credit, they all battled through and posted some good results and kept fighting in each race.

“Zac had had a tremendous weekend, winning five out of six races only lost one race by the smallest of margins. Both Hunter and Tom had an issue in at least one race which prevented them from getting the results they were after but I admired how they moved on and never gave up. They time will come in future rounds,” Irving ended.
