Outlining the features that make this model more versatile than ever.
Honda has introduced an updated version of its Africa Twin for 2018, making a versatile machine even more capable for this year. Earlier this week we were able to see the model up-close at a Honda Motorcycles Australia press gathering in Sydney and here are just some of the finer points that make the Africa Twin Adventure Sports what it is.
Q: What’s new on the latest MY18 Africa Twin?
A: All three Africa Twin models boast Throttle-By-Wire with three riding modes in addition to a User mode, expanded Honda Selectable Torque Control parameters (now featuring seven options and off) and revised intake and exhaust for stronger mid-range response. The front and rear spoked wheels constructed from stainless steel are new, as are a host of detail upgrades across the board. It also has a lightweight lithium-ion battery that saves 2.3 kilograms.
Q: How does pricing compare between the three Africa Twin models available in Australia?
A: The base model Africa Twin with ABS is priced at $17,499, however once you step up to the Adventure Sports models the Manual Transmission ABS option is $19,499 and the Dual Clutch Transmission variant is $19,999. Take note, the Adventure Sports models are available in one 30th anniversary Tricolore paint scheme to celebrate the XRV650’s launch in 1988.
Q: Why is the Adventure Sports option on the next level?
A: In simple terms, it has longer travel suspension with an extra 20mm front and rear, a flatter profile seat and a more upright riding position. The fairing and shield provide added wind protection, the extended fairing has a protective cowl bar, an extra large skid-plate is fitted, plus a hefty sump-guard and side-pipe fully protects those areas. You’ll benefit from a 24.2-litre fuel tank, which is 5.4l larger in capacity, as well as heated grips and an AC charging socket as standard equipment. According to Honda, it is ‘designed to offer long-distance riders an ultimately elevated adventure touring experience’.
Q: Where else do the base model and Africa Twin Adventure Sports models differ?
A: A few additional noteworthy points are that the Adventure Sports versions are longer by 10mm, physically higher including the seat height at 50mm taller, have a slightly longer wheelbase by 5mm, added ground clearance by 20mm and have added weight – 225kg for the standard Africa Twin, 242kg for the Africa Twin Adventure Sports and 252kg for the Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT.
