Multi-time world champion Valentino Rossi believes the recently resurfaced circuit in Catalunya will benefit the Movistar Yamaha YZR-M1 at this weekend’s seventh stop of the MotoGP World Championship.

Rossi, who’s coming off a podium at the Mugello grand prix, says there’s more potential for a stronger result in Spain, declaring the team discovered a positive setting after testing at the Catalunya venue last month.

“I hope I can be stronger at the Catalunya circuit,” said Rossi. “I think our potential there is better than it was at Mugello. At the test in Montmeló we found something. The new track surface is better for us, the new asphalt helps the Yamaha. We were still suffering in some places, but we have to stay focused, not give up and try to gain points.”

Movistar Yamaha director Massimo Meregalli is also under the belief the Spanish circuit will play into the team’s favour, making it clear that there’s a positive energy in the squad heading into the round.

“We’ve already been able to try the new asphalt, so we have a basis set-up in place for Friday,” Meregalli explained. “The team is looking forward to getting this weekend started, because the track’s lay-out generally suits our bike and also Valentino and Maverick have had their fair share of success there.”

Rossi currently sits an impressive second in the MotoGP World Championship standings, 23 points behind reigning champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda).
