Six weeks after breaking both of his legs in a motocross training incident, Moto2 contender Remy Gardner returned to racing at the Catalan grand prix in impressive fashion.

The Australian started from P23 before negotiating his way through the field, ultimately winding up in 15th at the conclusion of the 22-lap outing.

“On one hand I am happy to be back racing and happy to show that both me and the team are able to fight in the points, but on the other hand I am disappointed as I really felt I could have got 14th,” Gardner explained. “I was struggling a bit but it’s good to get another world championship point and I should be in much better shape for Assen.

“It was definitely a long hard race and I’m proud to have even finished given the injury. Big thanks to the team and to all of my supporters around the world who have sent so many encouraging messages during my recovery.”

The Tech3 Moto2 rider has an additional two weeks to recover before returning to the grid at Assen in The Netherlands on 1 July.
