Supersport 300 victory for Cube Racing's Bayliss at Phillip Island

Cube Racing press release:

Cube Racing’s Oli Bayliss stormed to victory in the Supersport 300 category at this weekend’s 2018 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, capping off what has been a spectacular season for the team at Phillip Island.

The 15-year-old stood on the top step of the podium during the MotoGP weekend, emulating father and triple world champion Troy Bayliss, who also won the national Superbike class today in a thrilling result for the family.

Bayliss junior qualified on the front row of the grid with a 1m50.551s lap-time on Friday, when on-track delays resulted in the Supersport 300 action being reduced to two eight-lap races for the weekend.

He then went on to record a third-place result in race one on Saturday morning – just 0.062s from victory in a photo finish! Oli turned the tables on Sunday for first position however, edging across the line by 0.092s to seal the overall.

“It feels really good to be back on top of the podium, especially at the last event of the year,” Bayliss beamed. “The ASBK championship was pretty good for us even though I had some bad luck, but to win at the grand prix is a really big achievement for me.

“I really worked on my run to the line after getting pipped in race one, but I timed it perfectly for the win. It feels great to win on the same weekend as my dad with all the world championship teams that were here for the weekend, so we are so happy!”

Cube Racing team owner Ben Henry was proud of Bayliss’ performance over the weekend, excited to see the talented teenager put it all together across both races. Strategy was pivotal in the final encounter.

“How good was that!?” Henry said. “That was our last race with the little Ninja 300 and we’re stoked to see Oli win it with the Cube Racing team. He’s such a good rider, has worked so hard and it’s just so good to finish with this result – we gave him a few tips on how to get to draft across the line and he did it perfectly.”

The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix marks the end of the national racing calendar for Cube Racing and Bayliss, wrapping up a brilliant year together at the world-famous Phillip Island circuit.
