The national Superbike and Supersport 300 categories held in conjunction with the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island last weekend saw father/son duo Troy and Oli Bayliss earn top honours in their respective classes, marking a special moment for the three-time world Superbike champion.

Bayliss stormed to victory in the opening Superbike encounter and backed it up with a pair of second place finishes for the overall win, while youthful talent Oli promoted himself to the top of the weekend’s standings with a race win in the final Supersport 300 outing.

The incredible double victory caps off magnificent return year to racing for 49-year-old Bayliss, who finished out the ASBK series third in the standings after clinching victory at the season finale earlier this month.

“I’m really happy [with the win], and I’m really happy for Oli to do the same thing in Supersport 300 as well,” Bayliss explained to CycleOnline.com.au. “I said to him it’s not easy to plan that, and it doesn’t happen very often. We were both pretty happy in the car on the way back to the airport – it was really great.

“In the last two race meetings I’ve had overall wins, so it’s really satisfying. To do it at Phillip Island on grand prix weekend is just a massive bonus for everyone involved and our sponsors. It’s great to finish on a good note with everyone there.”

Bayliss revealed to CycleOnline.com.au last week that the plan is to continue on racing with his DesmoSport Ducati outfit in 2019, where he’s set to remain aboard the twin-cylinder 1299 Panigale R Final Edition for at least the opening two rounds before making the switch to the highly-anticipated Panigale V4.
