Bike: 2019 KTM 790 Adventure range

Production KTM 790 Adventure R and 790 Adventure models unveiled.

After much anticipation, KTM has officially unveiled its production 790 Adventure R and 790 Adventure models in a special presentation overnight at EICMA in Milan, Italy.

The KTM 790 Adventure R is a lightweight, agile and technically advanced machine for adventurers that endeavour to challenge themselves while challenging tricky terrain. The KTM 790 Adventure is for travel enduro fans of every ambition and ability, ready to discover new roads whichever way it’s pointed at – no matter surface.

Both powered by the 799cc LC8c parallel twin – first seen in the KTM 790 Duke – the engine has been tuned to deliver its torque lower down the rev range to fit the specific requirements of adventure riding. The result is smooth acceleration, plentiful performance and a 450 km range from a 20-litre tank.

Developed from KTM’s off-road race DNA, the 790 Adventure R is a serious off-road motorcycle equipped for extreme terrain. With the hardcore adventurer in mind, it balances the power of a twin, with the lightness and agility of a single-cylinder off-road bike, to open up new riding possibilities. It offers an impressive fuel range without compromising agility, feeding a powerful yet compact, smooth and reliable engine. Access more extreme and distant off-road terrain thanks to easy-to-use rider aids and practical ergonomics.

The LC8c is the most compact performance engine on the market, and the 790 Adventure R’s version was specifically adapted to the needs of serious off-road adventure riding – minimal vibration thanks to two balancer shafts, a six-speed sequential gearbox, and advanced engineering for weight optimisation. The exhaust is made from stainless steel, as is the muffler, which has been designed to be as small and light as possible to aid mass centralisation. This compact muffler is positioned as high as possible for better ground clearance.

The KTM 790 Adventure R is ready to conquer all extremes. Its tubular CroMo steel frame and lightweight steel trellis subframe are engineered to be compact but strong, to handle harsh conditions. A steering damper aids stability, while the heavy-duty spoked 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels with Metzler Karoo 3 tyres are specifically developed for off-road riding performance.

When setting off for an adventure ride, there are so many variables with bike setup that can influence the bike’s performance: rider weight, extra luggage, fuel – it all has to be taken into account before heading off-road. The KTM 790 Adventure R comes with high-performance WP suspension perfectly suited to venturing farther off the beaten track, which means, no matter the type of terrain, it can be adjusted to suit most riders’ personal preference and riding conditions.

The KTM 790 Adventure R has several adjustable features to enhance rider comfort, including a higher or lower seat option, and six handlebar mount positions. A low-slung fuel tank, which lowers the centre of gravity, improves handling, and allows the rider to move around more freely. Its long-distance race ergonomics are designed for extreme riding, and the easy-to-access air filter makes it simple to change on the trail.

This all-new travel enduro concept is built around a lightweight and compact enduro-oriented chassis, and continues with sleek but impact-resistant bodywork, which not only offers protection for the motorcycle, but also reduces the overall weight of the 790 Adventure R so it can be easily ridden further off-road. Its bold and aggressive KTM design has been developed in parallel with the new Factory Racing rally bike.

When you find yourself in a tricky situation, ABS, MTC and ride modes are there to assist in a variety of conditions. MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control) is KTM’s lean angle sensitive traction control system that reacts immediately if the rotational speed of the rear wheel is disproportionate to the riding situation. Rally mode allows a more direct control over the various functions, allowing the rider to determine the character of the bike more freely.

The rider can more precisely fine-tune the slip adjust to match the condition of the surface, the skill level of the rider and the requirements of the ride. The Ride-By-Wire system electronically translates the throttle commands of the rider into optimum throttle valve positions for the current riding situation. If you’re looking for a high-performance motorcycle that’s lightweight and compact, one that specialises in adventure touring with the ability to explore further off-road when the tarmac ends, then look no further than the KTM 790 Adventure. This sporty travel bike, with KTM’s off-road genes, is built for endless travel enduro exploration and holds huge potential for off-road riding. Whether it’s in the desert, on remote mountain trails or a transcontinental crossing, no other twin-cylinder travel enduro bike can match it.

The new generation LC8c in-line twin-engine with 95hp (70kW) – combined with modern electronics and a six-speed sequential gearbox – ticks all the boxes for a travel enduro motorcycle that can be ridden up to 400km between fuel stops on the open road. Smooth long-distance travel is assured thanks to two balancer shafts, which keep vibration to a minimum, and, with long service intervals of 15,000km, you can ride for days on end without a worry.

The KTM 790 Adventure is a versatile motorcycle that’s ready to explore further in any conditions. It’s well balanced and purposeful, with sporty handling on the tarmac, and inspires confidence inspiring off-road. The advanced tubular CroMo steel frame and lightweight steel trellis subframe are engineered to be compact, but durable, to handle a full load on longer rides. A steering damper aids stability, while the heavy-duty spoked 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels are specifically developed for off-road riding performance.

The KTM 790 Adventure’s ergonomics allow it to perform as brilliantly off-road as is does on. A low-slung fuel tank lowers the centre of gravity, improves handling, and allows the rider to move around more freely. At high speeds on the open road, the 790 Adventure benefits from a higher screen, which offers maximum wind protection, while the twin-seat design ensures both rider and passenger are comfortable on longer trips.

The bodywork on the KTM 790 Adventure has been kept to a minimum. The robust plastics have been manufactured in color to retain their appearance in case of scratching. The tank spoilers and rear side panels are slightly wider than the seat for improved control and to reduce wear and tear on the seat. The LED headlight mask is reduced, taking design cues from KTM’s rally bikes to create a slim, lightweight front end. The 790 Adventure is available in two colour options: orange and white.

Ride modes allow the rider to adapt the behaviour and feel of the engine, while KTM’s lean angle sensitive traction control system (MTC – Motorcycle Traction Control), reduces wheel spin based on the chosen mode or riding situation. KTM’s cornering ABS system allows riders to use the full power of their brakes while taking the lean angle of the motorcycle into account. It has an advanced off-road mode that can also be turned off.

Availability is anticipated for June 2019. Riders are encouraged to express their interest in the KTM 790 Adventure range via www.ridektm.com.au/790-adventure.
