Nelson now overall winner following ASBK class infringements.
A post-race inspection revealed a breach of technical compliance on multiple Supersport 300 and R3 Cup entries at Phillip Island, shuffling results following disqualifications.
The Yamahas of Brodie Gawith and Varis Fleming – initial winner of the R3 Cup opener – had their points across all six SSP300 and R3 races removed due to breach.
Fleming’s exclusion meant that Glenn Nelson – who reportedly also had his machine checked on the weekend – now leads the R3 Cup point-standings.
The infringement serves as a strict warning to competitors in both categories amid continued speculation surrounding a number of front running riders not complying with the regulations for each class.
A statement from Motorcycling Australia read: “Following post-race technical inspection, a report from the ASBK chief technical officer to the ASBK race director confirms a breach of ASBK technical regulations 4.26.4 technical regulations (SSP300) permitted modifications and Appendix B: R3 Cup class and technical rules – 7.3.1 (for R3 Cup) as a breach of engine component for riders #25 Brodie Gawith and #35 Varis Fleming.”
Gawith and Fleming are Yamaha R3-mounted for both categories and leave round one with zero points to their credit, with further machine testing expected across these classes in round two of the Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship at Queensland Raceway on 18-20 March.
