Senna Agius turned heads in his Moto2 debut in the FIM JuniorGP World Championship, scoring a pair of convincing second-place finishes at Estoril to open his 2022 campaign in the class.

Agius transitioned to the category from the Moto3 Junior World Championship, where he previously competed with the SIC58 Squadra Corse.

While the 16-year-old showed flashes of speed on the Honda Moto3 machinery, the step up to the bigger capacity motorcycles has allowed his talent to shine, showing strong pace immediately to win the opening round of 2022 Australian Supersport at Phillip Island before heading back to Europe.

The Promo Racing rider qualified second in Portugal, topped Sunday’s warm-up, and went on to finish each race behind eventual winner Lukas Tulovic.

“So happy to be on the podium for my first races with a Moto2 in this championship,” Agius explained. “A huge thanks to my team for all the efforts in helping me adapt to this bike so quickly.

“Still lots to improve on with myself but with this solid crew I’m looking forward to it.”

Both Agius and Tulovic – who has been in the category for a number of years and is historically strong at Estoril – had over 10 seconds over the field in the second race.

The pair clearly were in a league of there own at round one, and as Agius gains more experience on Moto2 machinery it will be intriguing to see how he improves throughout the season, with the next round taking place on 22 May in Valencia, Spain.
