MotoGo team’s unique ASBK-ProMX crossover strategy

Independent dealer team expands racing program to national motocross series.

As round two of the 2024 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) kicks off at Sydney Motorsport Park today, it marks the beginning of a busy schedule for MotoGo Yamaha after expanding their racing commitments to the Penrite ProMX Championship.

Making their debut in the motocross series one week ago at Wonthaggi’s season-opener, MotoGo will field Cambell Williams in the MX2 category this year, adding eight rounds of national racing to its existing ASBK program.

The latest dealer-operated race team to arrive on the scene, MotoGo is a Victorian-based Yamaha dealer led by Patrick Li that has established itself in ASBK as a formidable operation, currently fielding Bryan Staring as its single rider on a YZF-R1M in the premier class of ASBK.

Now – and not too dissimilar to the likes of dealer-based motocross teams WBR and Moto1 before them – MotoGo has decided to invest in a motocross team and it’s 19-year-old Williams who will be on the bike for this season.

A former MX3 winner at the venue and also a young rider with past experience at Honda Racing (2022) and Empire Kawasaki (2023), this lower profile opportunity in blue serves as a chance for him to get his career back on track. Injuries and a bout of dented confidence impacted his results in recent seasons, but it’s evident that speed is on his side at least.

Where to from here? First of all, the MotoGo team needs to quickly adapt to dirt bike competition while leaning on past experience in Superbikes, and then on top of that they’re going to have to find that balance between managing both series – which will see back-to-back rounds of racing, such as Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend following Wonthaggi’s ProMX season-opener last Sunday.

As for their riders, well, they’re both at different stages of their careers, with former Australian champion Staring in the twilight of his racing years, while Williams finds himself with a chance to reignite his aspirations as a professional racer, if he seizes the opportunity.

Only time will tell how it will all play out, although regardless, it’s always a positive to see increased support and investment spread across the sport domestically.
