Australian crashes out of Portugal's penultimate round.
Remy Gardner’s 2024 Motul FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) campaign has come to a premature end after breaking his wrist in Portugal on the weekend.
After qualifying in P16, the GYTR GRT Yamaha entry was involved in a race one incident during the early stages, resulting in a wrist injury that not only ended his weekend, but also his season.
Gardner is understood to have suffered a fracture to the hamate bone in his left wrist, and will undergo further medical evaluation in Spain this week.
“That’s a disappointing way to finish our season, unfortunately,” Gardner reflected. “We struggled in the Superpole with tricky conditions and our starting grid position surely didn’t help us in race one.
“We were confident in the dry and I thought I could make a good comeback, but after just one lap I got involved in an incident and I crashed. Unfortunately, I have broken my wrist, which brings our weekend to an early end and probably the season with the final round only next week, which isn’t the way I wanted to finish the year.”
The Australian is currently ranked 10th in the world championship standings as the series is set to wrap up this weekend in Jerez, Spain.
