A bold new plan has been uncovered by Motorcycling Australia (MA) to add a separate ‘Next Gen’ category within the Supersport class from round three of the 2025 ASBK season at Queensland Raceway this May, before adopting the modernised regulations across the board in 2026.

In a decision that will move to align the Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) with international competition, promoting a wider range of manufacturers and motorcycles in the category.

Although yet to be finalised, Yamaha’s new YZF-R9 will become eligible, as well as the Ducati Panigale V2, MV Agusta F3 800 and Superveloce, Triumph Street Triple 765 RS and Suzuki GSX-R750. Existing models including the all-conquering YZF-R6, Honda’s CBR600RR, Kawasaki ZX-6R and 636 will all remain eligible.

“The ASBK Management Team confirms this announcement at an early stage to assist riders and teams to use the 2025 season for race development and to prepare in advance for the 2026 ASBK championship and the all new ASBK Supersport Next Gen championship class,” a statement from MA announced.

“ASBK is already a highly competitive championship and has seen a long list of riders start their careers in ASBK and go on to take on the world championships and/or win Superbike titles. To ensure this pathway remains strong, it is important to make sure they are competing on the newest machines under the latest regulations.

“This decision by the ASBK Management Team helps to ensure the next generation of rider can continue to use the ASBK championship to create their skills and performance.”

It’s anticipated that the ASBK Next Gen Supersport regulations will be largely based upon those utilised in the British championship, with further information to be made available in March following ongoing discussion during this weekend’s opening round of the 2025 season at Phillip Island.
