Current Supersport number two details Queensland Raceway.
South Australian talent Olly Simpson delivered a standout ride at round three of the 2025 Mi-Bike Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK), claiming a spectacular race two victory and landing third overall in the Supersport class at Queensland Raceway. The 27-year-old features in our latest edition of Profiled.
Simpson has been a consistent presence at the front of the Supersport field in recent years, finishing third in the championship last season while racing aboard independent Yamaha machinery. In a late off-season move ahead of 2025, he made the switch to BCperformance Kawasaki.
The new environment has seen him maintain his front-running form on the Ninja ZX-6R, opening the season on the podium at Phillip Island in P3, and backing it up with a solid P4 finish at Sydney Motorsport Park’s second round.
From the outset of the weekend at Willowbank’s Queensland Raceway, Simpson made his intentions clear. He topped Friday’s free practice session with a 1m11.166s, before qualifying fifth with a 1m11.148s – strategically opting towards conserving a new tyre for the races rather than a last-ditch push for grid position.
“It’s actually a really solid weekend for us as a team, on Kawasaki as well,” Simpson told CycleOnline. “We started off really good in practice, we ended up on top and had a really good pace. Even in qualifying, I saved an extra tyre, so I was fifth on the grid, but still had some really good race pace.”
Despite a challenging opening race that saw him finish ninth after an off-track excursion, BCperformance Kawasaki’s Simpson bounced back in style – taking an impressive race two victory in a back-and-forth battle with overall winner Tom Bramich, with the two separated by 0.012s as they crossed the line in a photo finish.
“When it comes to the race, unfortunately, the first race had run into a little bit of a drama and ran off the track and finished ninth – which is a bit of a bummer because I had some really strong pace in that one too. But yeah, that final race was really good. It was just really just a battle towards the end, and I just managed to [beat] Tom [Bramich] to the line.”
“For the whole team, it’s such a good thing just to get the win out of the way, because we’ve been putting a lot of hard yards in testing in between races. So it’s just great to give the guys a gift back, sort of thing. But yeah, the amount of testing and things we’ve had to try on the bike to get it where it is – it’s a lot.
“Now things are starting to come together and we’re slowly starting to build a bit of momentum, so I think for the next few races we will be really good contenders.”
With momentum on his side and the belief building, Simpson’s breakthrough victory in race two could prove a defining moment as the season progresses in the Supersport category.
With five rounds still left to run in ASBK 2025, the South Australian currently sits second in the series standings, 27 points behind leader Jack Mahaffy.
