European Commission approves the acquisition after 14-month investigation.
The acquisition of MotoGP and WorldSBK properties by US-based media powerhouse, Liberty Media, has been finalised, as the European Commission gave its ‘unconditional approval’ of the deal, which is expected to close by July 3.
Liberty agreed to purchase MotoGP and WorldSBK from Dorna Sports in April last year, however, the commission then opened an investigation into the deal soon after, with both competition and broadcasting conflicts under the microscope.
As the owners of Formula One, adding MotoGP and the Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) to the portfolio had the possibility of introducing a monopoly effect, where each entity could be used as leverage when selling the broadcasting rights globally.
In addition, Liberty Media is a subsidiary of parent company Liberty Global, which is a leading cable operator in several European countries. Following a 14-month investigation, the commission ultimately responded satisfactorily, giving the green light to the deal today.
As such, Liberty revealed that it will acquire 84 percent of Dorna Sports, with the current MotoGP management retaining 16 percent in a deal that valued the company at $7.7-billion AUD (4.3-billion Euros).
“Today’s approval from the European Commission marks the final condition to closing Liberty’s acquisition of MotoGP,” commented Derek Chang, Liberty Media president and CEO. “We are thrilled to officially commence Liberty’s partnership with Carmelo and his excellent management team.
“MotoGP is a highly attractive premium sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase, and a strong cash flow profile. We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential, which we will look to realize through deepening the connection with the core fan base and expanding to a wider global audience.”
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, added. “We are very happy that the European Commission has approved the transaction. This is an important milestone confirming the even brighter future that lies ahead.
“MotoGP is one of the most thrilling sports on earth, and we look forward to accelerating the sport’s growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world. Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire community, and we are excited to create even greater value for our fans, commercial partners, and everyone competing.”
Liberty’s acquisition has generated intrigue around the future of MotoGP, with the company purchasing Formula One for $8-billion USD in 2017, and through a range of initiatives – highlighted by the highly-successful Netflix ‘Drive to Survive’ series – has accelerated that value by more than double just eight years later.
