Monday’s MotoGP test in Misano marked Jack Miller’s initial shakedown of the topical new YZR-M1 V4 prototype, which he’s said is ‘doing all the right things’ despite being in its early stages of development.

The Prima Pramac Yamaha rider clocked a total of 57 laps around the Italian racetrack following the San Marino Grand Prix, sharing the new machine with both Monster Energy Yamaha riders Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins.

Noting both the characteristics of his current M1 configuration – which he raced to 12th on Sunday from 21st on the grid – compared to the updated motorcycle, the 30-year-old notes both the positive and negative elements when contrasting the two.

“It has been very interesting for us to have the chance to do the shakedown of the new Yamaha V4 bike,” reflected Miller. “It‘s been a good test to understand both the strong points of the machine and the weak ones, trying to maximise the strong areas and improve the weak ones.

“We are on the right path – the bike is working well, and in some areas we‘ve already made progress compared to this year’s YZR-M1, so we are going in a good direction. Coming from the old M1, whose strongest point was corner speed, we are now trying to find a new balance in terms of geometry, weight distribution, and all those aspects.

“The bike is doing all the right things, now we just need time, as these are still the very early days of the project.”

Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez raced the new M1 V4 to 14th place at the San Marino GP on Sunday in a wildcard entry, as the storied Japanese manufacturer works to close the gap on the Borgo Panigale contingent at the head of the field.
