A mid-race engine failure capped off what was a troubled outing for Australian Moto2 standout Senna Agius in Malaysia, lacking pace throughout the weekend after winning at home.

Fresh from a spectacular victory at Phillip Island, Agius and the Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP team struggled to extract front-running speed at Sepang, with the 20-year-old qualifying in a lowly 23rd position.

Climbing through the field during the early stages of Sunday’s race, Agius’ uptick in form was ultimately short-lived, with his motor giving way on lap six and marking a premature end to his weekend.

“Not a good race for us today, even though I got off to a decent start,” Agius recalled post-race. “I settled in the pack, but I didn’t have a good feeling for the bike. Nevertheless, I worked my way forward and was on track to score some points.

“Unfortunately, the engine broke later going into turn one – I don’t know exactly what happened, but I lost power along the straight. We came here with some positive results, so we need to keep our heads down and learn from this weekend.”

Agius drops two spots in the Moto2 World Championship standings and sits 10th as the series heads to Portimao for the penultimate round on November 9.
