Team Honda Racing’s Wayne Maxwell has warned not to hand Josh Waters the 2012 QBE Australian Superbike Championship trophy just yet, adamant that he’s not done yet in the race for the title.

Maxwell’s title bid suffered a serious blow in Queensland earlier this month as he carded seventh overall, not helped by a brake problem that forced him to pit during race two.

That has allowed Waters to race off to a 30-point advantage with just four races in two rounds remaining, but Maxwell insists that he plans to apply pressure on Waters every step of the way.

“The guys at Team Honda Racing are trying super, super hard, so every time something like that goes wrong it’s disappointing for all parties,” he explained. “You can’t control everything in life, so we’ll battle on at Phillip Island.

“I’ve won every race I’ve finished there [this year], so hopefully we can continue that pattern and keep getting those points back. It’s not over until it’s over.

“Winning races is our plan and we’ll stick to that – that’s all we can do. It’ll be okay and we’ll see what we can do come round six.”

Maxwell’s closest charge at the title came in 2009 when it went down to the wire with Waters, before he crashed out of contention in spectacular fashion.

Phillip Island’s penultimate round will take place on 17-19 August.
