Broc Parkes claimed victory during Winton’s second round of the FX-Nationals today for the Yamaha Racing with Yamalube team.

Under bright clear blue skies round two of the FX-Nationals got underway again at the Winton Motor Raceway, just outside of Benalla in Victoria.

In contrast to last year’s round where the track was more ideal for jetski racing, Winton turned on the heat, both on and off the track.

FX-Superbike series leader Parkes kept the ball rolling again going into the second round with topping the time sheets in the 16-minute qualifying session with a 1m24.253, which he set on his third lap, adding two poles to his name so far this season in the FX-Nationals.

“Qualifying went really good, because yesterday was my first time here,” Parkes, who has never raced at Winton before, said after qualifying.

“We struggled a little bit up until lunch time yesterday, then in the afternoon we found a better set-up.

“The track is a little bit different to what I’m used to in Europe – a lot tighter. But the Yamaha R1 seems to be working really well, every time I get on the bike I feel more confident, so I’m really happy.”

Parkes was even happier when he went on to win the overall round series again making it two rounds wins in a row after he finished with a 1-1-2.

In the final race Parkes was beaten by Yamaha teammate Kevin Curtain, who ran runner-up for the day with a solid result with a 2-2-1 and along the way beating Glenn Allerton’s lap record with a 1m23.709. Allerton’s lap record from last year was a 1m23.842.

“It’s been awesome,” Parkes added. “We did the same at Sydney Motorsport Park, but it was in the wet, so it was good to come here and win in the dry.

“Especially because it’s my first time here and I didn’t really know what to expect so I’m really excited. I’m starting to understand the R1 a little bit more every day I ride it, it’s a really good bike.”

When asked if he could back it up tomorrow for the YMF-Loan Australian championship round, his reply was – “well that’s the plan,” laughed Parkes.

Third home on his Motorsport1/Gas Honda CBR1000RR was Victorian rider Chris Trounson with 8-3-3 finishes.

The first Kawasaki rider home for the day was Dustin Goldsmith in fourth, while Lachie Thomas rounded out the top five in a tie with Goldsmith.

The championship now sees Parkes leading on a healthy margin on 132. Curtain has leaped up to second, 30 points behind on 102.

Sitting on 94 points in third is Trounson and Matt Walters, who finished in seventh for the round after he unfortunately crashed out in the second race at Turn Eight.

One of the big name riders to have a difficult round was YRT’s Rick Olson. His day started off with a crash in race one, then while he was battling with Goldsmith in race two they came together and Olson’s gear shifter snapped off forcing him to retire. He did score 18 points however in the final race where he brought his R1 home in fourth.

The factory Yamaha team of Olson and Cru Halliday kept the dominant performance going in the FX-600 class when they finished one and two.

Olson was the clear victor of the day with a 1-1-1 and bagging a perfect 75 points with Halliday playing second fiddle for the day with a 2-2-2 for the round.

Callum Spriggs was the first Queenslander home in third, holding off his fellow Sunshine State rider, Aiden Wagner. Rounding out the top five was Victorian Justin di Giandomenico.

“Obviously pole and three wins is all we can ask for, but I’m very disappointed about the Superbikes,” Olson said. “Hopefully tomorrow we can have a repeat of the 600s and complete opposite on the R1.”

In regards to the championship, Both Olson and Halliday are tied on 133 points heading into the next round at Wakefield Park in May.

Curtain was the tear-away winner in the Formula Oz class winning all three races for the overall ahead of Parkes and Michael McMillan.

Russell Holland, who is returning to racing since last year when he crashed here at Winton and broke his shoulder-blade, finished fourth on the Inglis Honda Racing machine.
