Team Calvo/Laglisse’s Remy Gardner will be sidelined from next weekend’s third round of the Spanish CEV Repsol Championship after breaking his right arm in a testing crash at the Albacete circuit.

With the next two rounds on the calendar scheduled to be run at Albacete, Gardner was relishing the opportunity to test at the venue and had been setting a series of personal best times before the crash.

“It was close to the end of the day and I when came into the last corner the bike slid and threw me out of the seat,” explained Gardner. “As I went up my right arm slipped between the throttle and the brake lever and when I landed back down my arm snapped over the handlebar just above the wrist.

“I knew straight away it was broken. I jumped off the bike but my arm was still caught, so I was running along side it and eventually had to throw myself and the bike down, and landed face first into the gravel.”

Gardner was examined by MotoGP specialist Doctor Xavier Mir, who confirmed a clean break to his radius and ulna bones. The relatively simple break is expected to heal by itself within a cast in readiness for the following round at Albacete.

Remy’s father Wayne had been present at the session and said his son had been in a lot of pain following the unusual crash.

“It was horrible having to see Remy in so much pain,” he explained. “I’ve been through it plenty of times myself, but it’s not the same as seeing it happen to your son.

“It was an extremely unusual injury, and I’ve never seen anything like this before. I can totally understand why he’s so disappointed, but it’s the nature of the racing game and injuries are bound to happen sooner or later.”
