MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez will miss upcoming Sepang and Phillip Island tests after breaking his leg dirt tracking in Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Repsol Honda rider will miss Sepang 2 next week in Malaysia, as well as potentially the special Bridgestone tyre test scheduled for Phillip Island in Australia on 3-5 March (click here for details).

“It was a really unfortunate accident that could happen to anyone at anytime,” 21-year-old Marquez explained. “I was rushed to hospital and Dr. Mir treated me – thankfully there was no ligament damage and it seems like a clean break.”

Marquez’s injury is a spiral fracture of his right fibula according to Dr. Xavier Mir, however the recovery process should be a fairly straightforward one over the course of a month layoff.

“The results showed no ligament damage or dislocation and no need to proceed with surgery,” he explained. “I expect he will need three to four weeks to fully recover.”

Marquez has already started rehabilitation with magnetic therapy and full recovery is expected for the season-opening Qatar MotoGP race on 21-23 March.
