Australia’s Joel Kelso has his focus firmly on a stronger San Marino Moto3 World Championship showing as he continues to build following a return from injury.

The 19-year-old made his comeback at last weekend’s Austrian GP after he was taken out heavily in the Dutch TT at Assen, resulting in a fractured right ankle and foot.

Kelso qualified 13th, just 0.623s from pole at the Red Bull Ring but suffered as the race progressed with his injured foot and started making mistakes while trying to manage the issue. He ultimately finished P22 but will put the result behind him as prepares for a better outing at Misano.

“Honestly, this is one of the hardest races we’ve done,” Kelso reflected. “We were doing well until the ninth or tenth lap. We suffered a lot from injury and physical condition.

“We couldn’t stay with the group. We made too many big mistakes and we lost contact. The hard times make it better for the good times. We will come back stronger in Misano.”

The 2022 Moto3 World Championship moves to Misano, San Marino on 2-4 September – a track where Kelso has achieved previous success, winning round seven of the FIM CEV Repsol Championship in Moto3 last year.
